The VKC Legal and Advocacy Training Project is a series of trainings that will inform and educate judges who preside over Special Education court cases and/or cases that involve individuals with developmental disabilities; attorneys who represent those individuals; and individuals and their family members involved in Special Education meetings or with the court system.
Trainings will provide information on legislative history relating to individuals with disabilities, Tennessee disability law as it relates to federal law, rights and procedural issues unique to Special Education hearings, Special Education evaluations and interpretations, remedies accorded by legislation, and the procedural issues involved in due process hearings. Trainings will also include advocacy strategies to insure that children with disabilities receive appropriate services in non-adversarial ways; and information to dispel beliefs about stereotyping capability based on disability.
Trainings will enable non-Special Education attorneys to represent parents of children with disabilities in due process hearings, pro bono, and will enable parents and professionals to provide support for parents of children with disabilities at special education meetings.
The training includes presenters from across the state include attorneys, educators, researchers, psychologists and medical doctors.
