Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) is a condition affecting children and adults resulting in symptoms of inability to maintain attention, impulsive behaviors, and/or motor restlessness. AD/HD is a neurobiological disorder resulting from problems in the dopamine neurotransmitter systems in the brain. Most cases are genetically inherited. Although individuals with AD/HD can be very successful in life, without identification and proper treatment, AD/HD may have serious consequences, including school failure, depression, problems with relationships, substance abuse, and job failure. Early identification and treatment are extremely important.

Services and Programs

• Family Outreach Center and Disability Services
  Disability-specific programs associated with the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and other organizations at Vanderbilt provide a broad range of treatment, research, technical assistance, education, and outreach services.
• Behavior Analysis Clinic
  The Behavior Analysis Clinic assesses behavioral problems and individually tailors intervention plans to meet the needs of families and care providers.
• Tennessee Disability Pathfinder - An internet community and statewide helpline
  Phone, web, and print resources in English and Spanish to connect the Tennessee disability community with service providers. Referral services, free of cost, are provided to persons with disabilities, family members, service providers, and advocates.
