Description

We are studying how differences in temperament may relate to differences in brain function. This is a longitudinal study that runs for three years and will initially include three visits to Vanderbilt, and then one visit to Vanderbilt and one phone interview per year for the next three years.

We will ask your child to:

• answer some questions about personality, feelings, and behaviors
• give several small saliva samples to measure DNA and hormone levels
• complete a practice MRI scan
• complete MRI scan of his/her brain

We will ask you to:

• answer some questions about your child’s personality, feelings, and behaviors
• complete a brief phone interview about your child once a year for three years

You, as the parent, will be paid $20 for each study visit to Vanderbilt and you will be given a $15 gift card for each phone interview. Your child will be paid $30 for each study visit without an MRI (clinical interview, questionnaires, saliva samples, and practice MRI scan) and $50 for the MRI scan.

Participant Criteria

Healthy children 8 to 10 years old, in one of two groups:

1) Children who are very outgoing

2) Children who are very shy
