Description

This intensive language intervention study is looking for children with Down syndrome between 18 and 42 months old. Study participation should last approximately 18-24 months, with the first 6 months being the most intensive, and the last 12 months consisting of periodic follow-ups.

We will ask you to:

  • Complete child assessment information before intervention begins.
  • Participate in observations at Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and at home before intervention begins.
  • Participate in parent training for 48-60 sessions at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and at your home.
  • Come for periodic follow-ups for up to 12 months after the intervention ends.

Participant Criteria

18 to 42 month old children with Down syndrome who:

  • have the ability to imitate actions using their body
  • have between 1 and 5 productive words or signs
  • use English as the home language
  • live within 30 miles of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center
  • do not have significant hearing/vision impairments

Compensation

We offer at no cost to the family:

  • Language assessments as part of the eligibility process.
  • 48 to 60 language intervention sessions

Visit Requirements

Multiple visits in home and at VKC over 18-24 months
