KidTalk WORLD: Working On Rapid Language Development

Description

The KidTalk project is looking for children to participate in a study examining language development in young children.Children are tested to see if they meet study criteria.

All children (with and without language delays) will receive:

  • Complete language assessments 4 times over 16 months at NO charge.
  • Assessment reports that tell you if your child needs additional help, and if so, where to find help.
  • Some money for your time.

Children with language delays:

  • Will be randomly chosen to receive KidTalk intervention or will be referred for community-based intervention.
  • Will receive 24-28, 1-hour KidTalk intervention sessions, 2 times per week (once at home and once at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center) where parents will learn language teaching strategies, if assigned to the intervention group.

Participant Criteria

We are looking for parent(s) and their 24 to 42-month-old children with:

  • Typical language and thinking skills
  • OR
  • Language delays and typical thinking skills

Compensation

Assessment and interventions at no cost, some money for completion.

Visit Requirements

12-28 1-hour KidTalk intervention sessions, 2 times per week

  • KidTalk Down Syndrome Communication Intervention Project
    Looking for:

    18 to 42 month old children with Down syndrome who:

    • have the ability to imitate actions using their body
    • have between 1 and 5 productive words or signs
    • use English as the home language
    • live within 30 miles of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center
    • do not have significant hearing/vision impairments

    Compensation: Yes
  • KIDTalk: Is your child with autism having trouble talking?
    Looking for:

    5 to 8 year old children with autism spectrum disorder who have made limited progress in spontaneous expressive language after at least 1 year of intervention.

    Compensation: Yes
