Wendy Stone, Ph.D.

Overview

Dr. Wendy Stone is a clinician-researcher whose work has focused on early identification and early intervention for children with autism spectrum disorders. Much of her research has been directed toward identifying and characterizing the early-emerging behavioral features of autism. Her research with young children has led to the development of the Screening Tool for Autism in Two-Year-Olds (STAT), which is now being adapted for use at younger ages. Current research projects include the identification of social-communicative markers in children under 24 months, the prediction of responsiveness to early intervention, and the early social development of infant siblings of children with autism. She participates in several multisite projects and networks, including the Autism Treatment Network (Vanderbilt Site PI), the Simons Simplex Project (Site Phenotype PI), the Autism Speaks Baby Siblings Research Consortium and Toddler Treatment Network, and a multisite randomized clinical trial with the University of Miami and the University of Massachusetts examining the effectiveness of Hanen’s More Than Words© program for parents of infants at risk for autism. Dr. Stone has authored many papers on the early identification, assessment, and follow-up of young children with autism, and is the author of a book for parents entitled, Does My Child Have Autism? She serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, and Infants and Young Children, and has participated in numerous NIH work groups and ad hoc review panels.
