BethAnn McLaughlin, Ph.D.

Overview

Our research group is interested in understanding the mechanisms which contribute to cell vulnerability to acute and chronic insults. To this end, we use a variety of in vitro and in vivo model systems to understand the cellular and molecular responses to neuronal stress in an attempt to develop clinically relevant neuroprotective strategies. For our work on acute neurological disorders, we focus primarily on understanding cell loss following hypoxic and ischemic insults as occurs in cardiac arrest and stroke and in cases of cerebral palsy caused by loss of oxygen during delivery. We are now working to combine high-throughput proteomic technologies and traditional biochemistry and toxicity assays to understand the elements which are required for the expression of tolerance in an effort to develop agents which can attenuate ischemic injury. Dr. McLaughlin is a member of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Leadership Council.
