The Vanderbilt University chapter of Best Buddies is currently planning an event called “Spread the Word to End the Word.” Best Buddies is an international organization whose goal is to foster one-on-one long-lasting friendships between college students and members of the Metro Nashville community with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
This event is part of a national campaign to take a stand against a word that has gained popularity in today’s culture, but is exceedingly offensive to many people. The “R-word,” or “retard(ed),” has found a place in everyday language and is generally accepted by many people, despite the fact that its use, casual or otherwise, is hurtful and disrespectful to millions of people with disabilities and those who love and care for them.
