TRIAD Para-Educator Workshop (West TN)

Wednesday, September 15-Thursday, September 16, 2010

The Department of Education, Division of Special Education, in collaboration with the Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD) of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, would like to announce its 2010 training opportunity for Para-educators who work with students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in the public schools. This 2-day training will take place in each grand region of the state and will be open to sixteen (16) trainees in each location. The workshop, conducted by TRIAD staff, will be geared specifically toward those para-educators who work with students with autism in grades K-12 and will cover topics including:

  • Characteristics of autism (including diagnostic, cognitive, sensory, and attention features)
  • Behavior management principles
  • Instructional strategies (including ABA techniques such as discrete trial training, structured teaching, and incidental teaching)
  • Integrating different methodologies

The training will provide opportunities for participants to: 1) practice techniques during hands-on activities, 2) create tasks and visual supports to take back to the classroom, and 3) problem-solve through challenges they face with particular students. Each participant will receive a certificate for completing the training.

Registration is free. To register for the workshop, please contact Linda Copas with the Tennessee Department of Education via email or (615) 741-7790.

Application Deadline: August 10, 2010.
