Location: Vanderbilt University Commons Center, Room 235

An important aspect of an integrated-comprehensive three-tiered model of prevention that addresses behavioral and academic deficits is the use of validated interventions. As part of a Goal 2 grant funded by the Institute for Educational Sciences (PR/Award #: R324B060018), we have studied Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) in writing as a tier 2 (secondary) and tier 1 (primary) intervention with elementary-age students (grades two to five). Join us to learn how to use SRSD to assist your students in writing both narrative and opinion essays. We will provide copies of all the instructional materials we have used to teach students both the TREE (opinion) and WWW, What =2, How = 2 (narrative) strategies as well as self-regulation of the writing process. This year we also began work on a new writing strategy aligned with the Tennessee state writing test: TACO TOWER. This strategy includes a planning component (TACO) that helps students respond to the writing prompt and consider their audience and goals. The second part (TOWER) guides students in writing their “story about me.” We will also share a sneak preview of this strategy, which we are continuing to refine.

For more information about Project WRITE, see the following website:

This professional development opportunity will include information and instructional materials on the SRSD writing strategies for narrative and opinion writing. The training is offered to teachers and staff in the Williamson County School District on July 22. (Note. Please indicate on the registration form if you'd prefer the training be on July 23. If there's enough interest, we may hold a training session on that date as well). The event will be from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., and lunch and beverages will be provided. Parking will be available near the Commons Center (more information on this will be provided closer to the date). For a link to a map of campus and parking, please visit this site -
