About Autism

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant challenges in social functioning, verbal and nonverbal communication and a repertoire of repetitive, restricted or stereotyped behaviors. It is part of a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The other pervasive developmental disorders include PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified), Asperger's Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Many professionals and parents collectively refer to this group as Autism Spectrum Disorders.
