General State Health Insurance Information

Children's Special Services (CSS)
CSS provides medical services and reimbursement for medical care (surgery, physicians/clinic visits), medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and therapies for children to age 21 years who meet medical and financial criteria. CSS also coordinates primary and specialty care through the designated primary care physician and corresponding managed care organization network. State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)
SHIP is a statewide program that provides free and objective counseling and assistance to persons with questions or problems regarding Medicare and other related health insurances. In Tennessee, SHIP operates through the state's nine Area Agencies on Aging & Disability (AAADs). These agencies offer a variety of services besides SHIP, all aimed at helping persons who are elderly and/or have disabilities to live better lives.

TennCare (includes TENNderCARE, Tennessee's State Children's Health Insurance Program, or SCHIP)
TennCare is a state administered health insurance program for children and adults. The current TennCare program is really two programs. There is TennCare Medicaid, which is for persons who are Medicaid eligible, and TennCare Standard, which is for persons who are not Medicaid eligible but who have been determined to meet the state’s criteria as being either uninsured or uninsurable. Historically, individuals in both programs have received the same services. TennCare Standard enrollees with family incomes at or above poverty are required to pay premiums and copays, however.  For more information about TennCare, contact the Family Assistance Service Center at 1-866-311-4287 . To apply for TennCare, contact your local Department of Human Services (DHS) office.

Cover Tennessee offers several voluntary health insurance products.  Cover TN is designed to offer basic health coverage to uninsured, working Tennesseans; AccessTN is for those who have a chronic condition or who have been deemed uninsurable; CoverKids is a comprehensive plan for children.  The state expects to begin enrolling participants in Cover Tennessee in early 2007.  For more information about Cover Tennessee, call 1-866-CoverTN.
