Social Skills Summer Camp

Elementary Program

For children aged 6-11 years.

The typical daily schedule consists of large group activities, small group activities, outside activities, board games, and crafts. A different social skill is presented each day. Examples of daily social skills are: greetings, compliments, emotions, appropriate play, and choosing a topic for a conversation. Campers are given many opportunities to practice their social skills during structured lessons and other camp activities. Counselors use a combination of visual structure and behavioral strategies to help campers experience success during camp activities.

Transition Program

For children aged 12-14 years.

Transition campers participate in a modified program that includes both social skill development and community based activities. Like the elementary campers, transition campers focus on a social skill of the day. In addition, transition campers have the opportunity to practice these social skills through participation in field trips with the adolescent camp group. Examples of field trips include the Gaylord Entertainment Center and the Adventure Science Center.

Adolescent/Young Adult Program

For adolescents aged 15-21 years.

This program provides adolescents with the opportunity to practice both job skills and social skills. Adolescent campers have a daily social skills lesson on topics such as dealing with peer pressure and teasing, having conversations, and asking others to play a game. Adolescent campers also work on pre-vocational skills both at camp and in the community through field trips and supervised pre-vocational opportunities. In addition, campers in this group earn a small stipend each week for their work.

If you know a peer or a child with autism who would like to attend camp, call the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Camps and Art Coordinator at (615) 322-8529.
