In addition to the Center's five research support cores supported by NICHD, the Center offers other support to investigators.

Nicholas Hobbs Discovery Grants

Annually, the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center announces a call for proposals NHS Discovery Grants, an internal grant mechanism available to Center Investigators. The purpose is to promote pilot studies in preparation for submitting grant applications to federal agencies or substantial applications to private foundations. This initiative is supported by generous gifts of members of the Nicholas Hobbs Society. Awards are for 12 months (cost carry-over is possible). Awards will be granted up to $30,000 depending on the merits of the proposal, demonstrated need, feasibility of accomplishing a significant piece of work with the requested funds, and availability of funds. Final funding decisions are based on overall scientific merit and likelihood that proposed project will lead to external funding. The NHS Grants support original empirical research; it does not support nonresearch clinical interventions, demonstration projects, training programs, literature reviews, manuscript preparation, conferences, or workshops. The goal is to fund cutting-edge research that will advance scientific knowledge and contribute to the overall competitiveness of the Center.
