What are sleep disorders and developmental disabilities?

Sleep Disorders are a broad range of illnesses arising from many causes, including dysfunctional sleep mechanisms, abnormalities in physiological functions during sleep, abnormalities of the biological clock, and sleep disturbances that are induced by factors extrinsic to the sleep process.

What the Kennedy Center is doing:

Sleep architecture of individuals with mental retardation--National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (2003-2005)
Craig Kennedy, Ph.D., Principal Investigator, Mark Harvey, Ph.D.

In this study three groups of adults with mental retardation (mild, moderate, and severe/profound) are being studied to assess the presence of altered sleep architecture as function of level of mental retardation.
