Research Study of the Effect of Genes on the Brain

Dr. Ronald Cowan and his lab are conducting a research study to see how genes affect the function of the brain. There are two parts to the study. Subjects participating in the first part of the study will have their blood drawn for gene analysis and will answer brief questions about their mental and medical health. The results of the first part of the study will decide eligibility for the second part. If eligible, you will be asked to take part in a second, more extensive study. The first visit takes about 30 minutes.

Inclusion Criteria:

Caucasian females; ages 18-25; physically healthy

Exclusion Criteria:

Smoking; abnormalities of the endocrine system (diabetes, thyroid disorder, polycystic ovarian disease, etc); pregnancy; alcohol or other substance abuse; high cholesterol; use of any nicotine products; and some other restrictions apply. Study participants will undergo a thorough screening before entrance into the study.

Directions to the Psychiatric Neuroimaging Program

Coming from the south:

Take I-65 north

Take Exit 81, Wedgewood Ave.

Turn left off the Exit 81 ramp onto Wedgewood

Go approximately 1.5 miles and turn right on 23rd Ave. South. There is not a stoplight at this intersection.

Take an immediate left into the parking lot of the Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital.

You may park in the parking lot for the building but make sure you acquire a parking permit from the receptionist on the 1st floor.

Take the elevator tower (across from the lobby) to the third floor. Take a left out of the elevator and go down the hall for the entire length of the building. Here, you will reach a split in the hallway by a second set of elevators. Go left and enter through the door on the right marked "Psychiatric Neuroimagining Program" in Suite 3057.
