Dear parents and guardians,

My name is Megan Griffin, and I am a graduate student in Special Education at Vanderbilt University working in partnership with Mayor DeanŐs Advisory Council on Special Education in Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS).

Mayor Dean created the Advisory Council to assess the strengths and weaknesses of existing programs and policies of Special Education in MNPS.

Part of this task includes understanding the perspectives and experiences of parents, educators and interested community members.

With your survey participation, we will be able to examine your priorities and concerns so that recommendations may be made to Mayor Dean about future improvements for Special Education in MNPS.

The survey asks questions about Special Education services, staff, and policies.

Completing the survey is voluntary, and should only take about 10 minutes; additionally, you are free to skip any question you do not want to answer.

Please complete the attached paper survey, or the online survey at http://kc.vanderbilt.edu/SpecialEducation/, or

if you need to request a paper copy, please contact me at megan.m.griffin@vanderbilt.edu".

To make sure that your answers remain anonymous, please do not include any identifying information about you or your child. Surveys should be completed by August 31, 2008. Results of the survey will be reported in group form.

For additional information about giving consent or your rights as a participant in this study, please feel free to contact the Vanderbilt University Institutional Review Board Office at (615) 322-2918, or toll free at (866) 224-8273.

Thank you in advance for your participation in this important effort to improve Special Education in MNPS--we look forward to learning more about your perspective!

Sincerely,

Megan Griffin
